First therapy session: What to expect?

I have seen many people benefit from therapy when they had an idea of what is going to take place before they came in. Therapy happens in four parts.

  1. Information: You tell me about you and what you would like to achieve as a result of working on issues in therapy.
  2. Education: I provide some education about how to reach those goals.
  3. Application: We will explore together how you can apply those techniques and get results as quickly as you need to.
  4. Demonstration: We explore together how you can continually grow by demonstrating to yourself and others you can change and you can see your stressors differently.

Most importantly we will build a solid alliance that will assist you to feel supported. I often hear from my clients that they knew after that first session that they had met a HOPE focused counselor and it gave them HOPE in some pretty dark places.
